Metroid Direful is your Nintendo Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards

You've crowned Metroid Apprehensiveness as this year's winner of the Nintendo Brave of Year at the Golden Joystick Awards.

Nintendo has had an interesting year of releases, with end of class conversations dominated by the refund to pattern of Animal Crossover: New Horizons. However, for your Nintendo Game of the Class, there was a clear winner in Samus' latest adventure - Metroid Dread. Samus won out over the likes of Newborn Pokemon Tear down and Monster Orion Rise to hire the gong this year.

The full list of nominees was:

  • Bravely Default 2
  • Metroid Dread (winner)
  • Monster Orion Rise
  • Neo: The World Ends with You
  • New Pokemon Snarl
  • WarioWare: Get It Together

Free in October this twelvemonth, Metroid Dread is Samus' first gear original 2D root-scrolling adventure in 19 geezerhood, wrapping up a fib that's been some 35 years in the making.

For game series that caused the birth of the entire Metroidvania musical genre, it was so wonderful to see the masters give. Spell it might feature rigid competition from the likes of Hollow Knight and Ori and the Blind Forest, the classic Metroid serial publication hasn't suffered from its leave of absence, with excellent - and tough - boss fights, brilliant platforming, and a slip up of red-hot abilities to unlock. And that's without highlighting the terrifying E.M.M.I. golem sections that require stealing and accelerating reactions in even measure to embody the titular dread.

In our review, we highlighted how "Dread captures a sense of uncertainty through its world construction and sound design that can easily enchant your attention for hours on end. The series' e'er-distinctive courageous rate of flow well willing you further into a world that will frequently feel some insurmountable and overwhelming."

Metroid Dread is available immediately exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
